How to 'Kill' Your Friends Or Foes On Facebook

Can you imagine being locked out of your facebook page and your account turned to a memorial page.

Rusty Foster discovered he was dead last week, at least according to Facebook. He had been locked out of his account, which had been turned into a "memorial page," because someone had reported the Maine man as deceased to the social media site.

How to 'Kill' Your Friends Or Foes On Facebook
He tweeted Thursday, "Facebook thinks I'm dead. I'm tempted to just let it," then "Did you know that you can report any of your Facebook friends dead & Facebook will lock them out of their account with no evidence needed?"

BuzzFeed saw his tweet and decided to test how easy it is by "Killing" their editor John Herman

STEPS
1) They Filled out the memorization request form:

2) For the "proof of death", they found an obituary for a guy with a similar name (not even spelled the same!) who was 74 (the real John Herman is 34, so Facebook doesn't even try to match the details provided to the person's real account)

And Viola. . .He is Dead!! When the "dead" person tries to login to their account, this happens:

Social Media Hazard:Facebook Lover Nabbed For Defrauding Friend

Another social media hazard story. Relationship advice for men is to be wary of social media love. The Police in Lagos on Monday arrested a Facebook lover for defrauding his lover of N200,000.  The Police said in Lagos that the suspect posed as a medical doctor to enable him swindle his unsuspected facebook girl- friend. The suspect claimed he would use the amount to secure a job for her with the Nigerian Customs Service.

Relationship advice for women is to be wary of facebook or social media love as well, as evidenced by the murder case of Cynthia Osokogu. Pure romance may be lacking thereof. Social media matters can be murky water to tread in.

Parading the suspect (names withheld), the Police spokesperson, Lagos state Police Command, Ms Ngozi Briaide, said the accused was arrested and charged to court about three years ago for a similar offence. Ngozi stated that the police could not immediately explain how he was freed in court without being convicted, noting that the suspect had become a serial fraudster who was in the habit of defrauding young girls.

According to her, the 36-year- old suspect was arrested after one out of the latest five victims complained to the Police on Nov. 15, adding that the suspect was thereafter arrested on Dec. 23 by detectives from Ogudu Division.  The spokesperson alleged that the first victim, Mrs Adebiyi Adenike, a graduate became his friend on Facebook after being attracted by the suspect as a Surgeon.

"He requested for the sum of N200,000 as PR and with her original certificate to enable him secure employment for her into the Customs and that he had a slot at the service," she said.

Ngozi stated that both the suspect and the victim met and set out for the journey to Abuja, but along the way to Air Port, the suspect pretended as if his vehicle had fault and asked her to come down and push the car. "

As soon as the victim pushed the car, he zoomed off with the victim's credentials, ATM and PHCN cards," she said. Ngozi gave the names of other victims defrauded by the suspect as Miss Okunola Folashade, Miss Ibrahim Bukola and Miss Adefemi Mercy. She said that they were all NYSC members who were defrauded by the same suspect on their way to Ibadan for community assignment.

The spokesperson alleged that they boarded his car to Ibadan on Dec. 20, but on getting to the Tollgate, the suspected diverted to the old Lagos/Ibadan road where he pretended as if the car developed fault and asked them to push thereafter he zoomed off with all their belongings.

Ngozi said that the items stolen from the victims included a Laptop, unspecified cash, certificates, ATM card, Toaster Machine, cell phones and clothes.

The fifth victim, Miss Akinbo Atinuke, also boarded the suspect's vehicle at Berger on Dec. 11, on her way to Ibadan, where the accused branched to a filling station and pretended the car could not start again, adding that the victim also pushed the car and he zoomed off.

The spokesperson said that the victim also lost her Laptop, Phone, SSCE Certficate, ATM card, NYSC discharged certificate, the sum of N104,000 which she withdrew from a bank with her ATM card.

Ngozi said that the suspect would be charged to court since all the witnesses were available with some exhibits, adding that the suspect has also made confessional statement. (NAN)

We Now Have The Right To Sell Our User’s Photos - INSTAGRAM

We Now Have The Right To Sell Our User’s Photos - INSTAGRAM
Instagram said yesterday 18th December 2012 that it has the perpetual right to sell users' photographs without payment or notification, a dramatic policy shift that quickly sparked a public outcry.

First time I scanned through the head I thought I saw users can now sell their instagram photographs, how greedy ridiculous can this corporate entities get? How the hell can you have right to sell my photographs without my consent/notification or payment? If I dint put it there, will you have access to sell it. Rhipplemedia finds it annoyingly inappropriate.

The new intellectual property policy, which takes effect on January 16, comes three months after Facebook completed its acquisition of the popular photo-sharing site. Unless Instagram users delete their accounts before the January deadline, they cannot opt out.

Under the new policy, Facebook claims the perpetual right to license all public Instagram photos to companies or any other organization, including for advertising purposes, which would effectively transform the Web site into the world's largest stock photo agency. One irked Twitter user quipped that "Instagram is now the new iStockPhoto, except they won't have to pay you anything to use your images."

"It's asking people to agree to unspecified future commercial use of their photos," says Kurt Opsahl, a senior staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation. "That makes it challenging for someone to give informed consent to that deal."

That means that a hotel in Hawaii, for instance, could write a check to Facebook to license photos taken at its resort and use them on its Web site, in TV ads, in glossy brochures, and so on -- without paying any money to the Instagram user who took the photo. The language would include not only photos of picturesque sunsets on Waikiki, but also images of young children frolicking on the beach, a result that parents might not expect, and which could trigger state privacy laws.

This is just insane. These just lose their common sense in pursuit of money.

Photo Filters: Twitter Vs Instagram

My opinion I dont really care about the filters... Looks like too much fuss about the filters already. But you have your opinion so I wanna hear it after you read the article.

With one bold step Monday, Twitter took the photo filtering fight directly to Instagram.
Until yesterday, Instagram was the undisputed leader when it comes to mobile photo filtering and sharing. But with its release of a new version of its mobile app that enables filters, Twitter has launched a very credible challenge to the crown.

To be sure, Instagram has a massive lead, and a very passionate community. But Twitter has a nine-figure user base, and now that it is offering filters -- albeit just eight, while Instagram has 18 free filters -- it can begin to chip away at its competitor's lead.

There's only one way to decide whose filters are best, though, and that's to compare them side by side. With that in mind, CNET took a single photograph and applied each of Twitter's and Instagram's free filters.

Twitter To Offer Photo Filters By End Of This Year - Report

Twitter To Offer Photo Filters By End Of This Year - Report

According to sources, the microblogging service is planning to add a variety of photo filters to its official app, and employees of the company are reportedly already testing the new features.

All Things Digital got a tip that such filters would be released on its app before the end of 2012. Meanwhile, The Next Web pointed out numerous telltale photos using black-and-white filters taken and posted by the company's chairman, Jack Dorsey.

Twitter's new photo app might offer pictures in a higher resolution than those of Instagram, according to The Next Web. Twitter's pictures will reportedly be square like Instagram's, but will be offered in 1024×1024-pixel resolution, rather than the latter's significantly smaller 612x612 pixels.

Twitter is apparently moving quickly after Instagram prevented its own photos from showing up properly in the new Twitter Cards. The feature, in Twitter's official application, made it easier to view Instagram photos by attaching them to tweets with links in the timeline. Now, Instagram photos can still be viewed on the Twitter app, but in an awkwardly cropped state. This is not the first we've heard of Twitter filters for photos.

In early November, there were reports from several Twitter sources that the company was preparing a variety of filters that users can apply to pictures uploaded to Twitter. Such a move would allow the company to compete directly against Instagram.

The conflict between Twitter and Instagram has intensified since Instagram was acquired by Facebook for $1 billion in early April of this year. Since then, instead of cooperating against the social network juggernaut, Twitter and Instagram have been at odds. We've contacted Twitter for comment about the existence of a new photo-filter feature, but the company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Over Half A Million People Voted Against Facebook’s Governance Changes, BUT...

Fortunately or unfortunately I wasnt one of the 619,000 people that cast their ballot in Facebook’s vote on site governance and policy, and 87% want to block the changes. But unless 299.4 million more people vote by tomorrow morning, Facebook users will lose the ability to vote on future changes, and their data will be intermingled with Instagram. Enough votes won’t be cast, so Facebook’s experiment with “democracy” will be coming to a close.

Truth is Im thinking of leaving facebook, so voting wont really do me any good when I finally leave the site. Where I go next is up to me.

Some think Facebook was never a democracy even with the voting structure since the system made it almost impossible for the results to be binding. This is the third, and likely final Facebook site governance vote, and it may end up drawing the highest turn out ever. It follows one in April 2009 when 665,000 people voted, and another last June where about 342,000 cast their ballots. Facebook got far more than the 7,000 necessary comments on this proposal to trigger the vote. As of now, 544,642 have voted against changes and 75,539 have voted for them.

Unless we see some miracle of digi-civic engagement by tomorrow at noon pacific when the voting period ends, the overwhelming sentiment against the proposed changes will just be taken “under advisory” and Facebook is free to enact the changes. Only if over 30% of all Facebook users vote would their majority decision be binding and could block the new versions of Facebook’s Statement Of Rights and Responsibilities and Data Use Policy.

Facebook Vote Share

To Facebook’s credit, it gave this vote a fair chance. It emailed all its users about the proposal, let people share the fact that they voted or the current results with friends, and showed those posts prominently in the news feed. Facebook could have minimized visibility of the vote with fewer sharing features and less feed presence, but didn’t.

The impact of the governance change will be subtle but important. Facebook will now operate like most other companies. It will listen to its users in more ways that before, but they won’t have a direct channel for affecting site policy. In the end, it’s the public market that will decide if Facebook treats its supporters right. Even if the voting system was largely a farce, without it, Facebook’s one billion users might feel a little less connected to the network that’s supposed to connect them.

You can vote here for either the existing site governance documents or the new proposed changes that remove the vote and permit the combination of Facebook and Instagram data.

Increasing Social Media Cheating

Social Media Relationship Cheats
My wife is a social media addict. She's always on her cellphone: texting, tweeting or Facebooking. I am beginning to suspect she is having a online romance

Shrink Rap
Your wife is having a romance, but it may be with social media rather than with a person. Social media is very captivating and people tend to invest far more time and energy into social media than they realise.

It offers richness and variety of relationships not always achievable in your immediate circle. The danger is that it can lead to inappropriate liaisons and relationships beyond the boundaries of what people in their regular lives would allow themselves.

The other danger is that people lose themselves, and their immediate relationships suffer. It is clear why it is hard for an ordinary person, let alone a stressed, tired or preoccupied spouse, to compete with the magnetic attraction and demanding nature of social media.

The definition of addiction is something that causes social or occupational impairment.

You definitely have grounds to confront your wife - but express it in the form of a loving request that she gives you more time and attention. - Leonard Carr

Supernanny
In my coaching practice, this topic is a frequent discussion point. Social media can sap the energy from a significant relationship.

When we count being in virtual communication as more important than the people in the room, we are setting up our relationships for disaster. We did not choose to be in a relationship to then find ourselves in isolation.

First check on your own behaviour - are you hooked on TV or some other form of technology? Discuss with your wife how isolated you feel when she is online. Then come to a compromise on when you can both use technology. For example, I know many couples who have an agreement to turn off all phones, tablets and laptops from 7pm.

Prioritising your marital relationship is a great way to reignite the romance. Plan nights out, read books together, watch a movie, have friends and family over for a meal. You will quickly find ways to have fun together if you are united in choosing to turn off the outside world for a while . - Stephanie Dawson-Cosser

Facebook Users To Be Charged A FEE To Highlight Posts, Im Saying Hmmm

Facebook has begun testing a new feature that would allow users to increase the visibility of their posts
for a fee, in what appears to be a new bid to add more profitability to the social network. “As part of a test starting today, people in the US can promote personal posts to their friends on Facebook,” the company said in a statement Wednesday.

“Sometimes a particular friend might not notice your post, especially if a lot of their friends have been posting recently and your story isn’t near the top of their feed,” it said. “When you promote a post — whether it’s wedding photos, a garage sale, or big news — you bump it higher in news feed so your friends and subscribers are more likely to notice it.”

The option will be made available to users with fewer than 5,000 friends and subscribers, Facebook said. Facebook did not specify the price of the new service, but TechCrunch.com said it would start at $7 per post, making it a potentially major source of profit for the social network, which counts 955 million members.

The testing began in New Zealand in May and has gradually spread to other countries.
A dismal stock market debut in May raised questions about Facebook’s profitability, and since then the company has said it is considering new revenue-generating schemes, including charging for some services.

Last month the company revamped its “Offers” service to require payments, starting at $5 per ad, for the deals offered through Facebook — making companies pay for what had been free advertising until now. Facebook has also added a feature that lets users send real-life cupcakes, coffee, stuffed animals or other gifts to friends in the social network.

The “Gifts” program is being rolled out gradually, starting in the United States, and Facebook stands to get a fee for brokering purchases. The world’s largest social network has seen its stock price sag since its market debut at $38 per share. Shares closed at $21.83 Wednesday.

Social Media: Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke Denied Being Hospitalized Via Facebook

Contrary to the media reports that Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke was hospitalised in a London hospital for an undisclosed ailment, she has debunked the rumour, describing it as untrue.

The minister while reacting to the news through her Facebook page, on Wednesday affirmed that both she and members of her family are okay.

The statement reads; “on the contrary to recently published articles concerning my health, I haven’t been hospitalized in London. Both my family and I are well.”

It would be recalled that Diezani was said to have been hospitalized late last week for stress-related ailment after she accompanied President Goodluck Jonathan to commission new oil fields in Anambra state last Thursday.
