Two Road Accidents Recorded By FRSC On Boxing Day

Sadly two crashes have been reported as Nigerians mark Boxing Day amid an economic crunch and fuel scarcity.

The Federal Road Safety Commission reports on its Facebook page that a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number XE 950 RSH, conveying five males and 10 females, crashed at Banda on Lokoja-Abuja Expressway.

One male passenger and five females were injured in the crash.

In a separate crash, an unidentified vehicle reportedly skidded off the road at a spot on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and slammed into the bush.

Witnesses said there were fears that none of the occupants survived the crash. No fewer than 91 persons are reported to have died in separate crashes across the country in the last six days, according to FRSC.

More details as the story develops. I just hope no more of this type of stories should be heard this season.

No fewer than 27 people perished, while 18 others sustained various degrees of injuries following an accident involving an articulated vehicle along Ruwa Wuri-Tangaza road on Monday, which also claimed the lives of a number of cows and sheep.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the trailer with plate number Sokoto XA 443 SAA, which was heading to Warri, Delta State from Mano village, allegedly lost control and plunged into a river close to Masallaci village in Tangaza Local Government.

The victims, who had been buried in Bagida village, reports say were from Bagida, Sabiyo, Tinnigere, Ruwa Wuri and Tsoni villages, all in the local government.

Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Sokoto, Dr. Umaru Aliyu, while confirming the incident said: “Our findings revealed that the accident occurred due to over-loading and over-speeding,” adding that the trailer was conveying both cows and humans.

“27 people died, while 15 were injured. Those injured are receiving treatment at Usman Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, UDUTH, Sokoto, while the driver of the trailer and his motor boy fled,” Aliyu said.

May the souls of the dearly departed rest in peace

On a day that was supposed to be perhaps her best day on Earth, reverse was the case for Miss Bisioye Adegbite, whose gentle soul was snatched away by the cold hands of death on her wedding day.According to reports, efforts of the supposed bride were ended in a ghastly motor accident shortly after she left home in a convoy of exotic cars for her church wedding somewhere in Ikeja, Lagos.

She was the only occupant of the car who died in the accident. According to the source, it was like a dream to the groom who was waiting anxiously for her arrival in order for them to begin the solemnization of their marriage in the church under the watchful eyes of their family members, friends and well wishers only to be told that the love of his life had been hijacked by the icy hands of death.

The man thought he was dreaming until he rushed to the hospital where he was shown the battered corpse of his darling bride by the doctor and broke down in tears uncontrollably.

The late Adegbite, 25, until her death was a final year student of Industrial Relation at the University of Cotonou, Benin Republic, she had since being interred.

Culled from The Sun

No fewer than 30 persons were killed while several others were critically injured yesterday at the ever-busy Mabolufon Junction, Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State stretch of the Lagos-Ore Expressway when a truck ran over them.

According to an eyewitness, the victims, who were mostly roadside traders and commuters waiting to board vehicles going to Lagos were said to have been run over by the truck bearing flower after it had rammed into a passenger bus believed to be going to Lagos State from Ondo.
As at 7pm yesterday, the remains of seven persons including a pregnant woman, were deposited at the morgue of the state hospital, Ijebu Ode, while the medics were battling to save the lives of over 20 persons said to be critically injured.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), police and the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) were sighted at the scene evacuating both the dead and the injured to hospitals within Ijebu Ode and the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu.

How the accident happened

The accident was caused by a trailer coming from Ikorodu at a time a truck and unmarked bullion van coming from Lagos were already at close range by the Mabolufon Junction. In a bid by the truck coming from Lagos to avoid ramming into the one from Ikorodu, it swerved and ran into people standing by the roadside.

The driver of one the trucks, Mr. Adebayo Adedayo, had been arrested while the youths of Mabolufon community acting on the supposition that the police caused the accident, attempted to mob police officers from the Obalende Division, who were despatched to the scene.

A Media Worker In Abuja Ran Over By Oil Minister Diezani Allison Madueke's Convoy Killing Him

James Momoh, an Abuja-based media worker, died a gruesome death after he was run over by a convoy belonging to the Oil Resources minister, Diezani Allison-Madueke. Momoh was reportedly on his way back from work at Nicon Junction, Maitama area of Abuja late Wednesday, when the tragedy occurred.

Momoh’s death was hushed up from the media because Diezani was protecting her image until the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT council learned of the incident and issued a statement today expressing their condolences to his survivors.
A PM News report indicated that Momoh was taken to the NNPC hospital where he later died after the incident. A statement by the Chairman of Council, Comrade Chuks Ehirim, described the death of Momoh, a production staffer with the newspaper, as avoidable and unfortunate.

According to Ehirim, the death of Momoh brings to fore the recklessness of government convoys and their absolute disregard for traffic rules and other road users. The NUJ FCT chairman accused the oil minister, who just returned to the country after an extended trip abroad, of failing to show any concern or human feeling for the dead man by reaching out to his relatives. He said she was rather more bothered about protecting her image.

Ehirim warned that the union will not fold its arms and watch government officials treat human lives with levity and called for proper investigation into the matter as well as proper compensation for the bereaved family. Mrs. Allison Madueke arrived in Nigeria on Tuesday morning on a British Airways flight after Saharareporters revealed that she was undergoing treatment for an undisclosed illness. She denied the report on her Facebook page, cut short her trip by one week and quietly returned to Nigeria on Tuesday only for her convoy to kill the newspaper man on Wednesday night.

It was not known at press time whether Mr. Momoh had a family or what memorial services are planned.

Road Safety: Igbinedion University Loses 4 Lecturer Too Auto Crashs

The 78th birthday celebration of business magnate and father of Lucky Igbindeion, former governor of Edo State, Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, assumed a disastrous dimension yesterday as one of the vehicles in his entourage plunged into the Ovia River, killing the four occupants instantly. The casualties whose identities could not be ascertained at press time were said to be lecturers of Igbinedion University, Okada, who travelled with Chief Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom, who earlier in the day launched his Benin-based Independent Television into satellite for viewing in 104 countries.

Three years ago, during his 75th birthday celebration, one of his staff died in an accident, while running an errand for the Benin high chief. Also last year, Omoregbe Okpenye (aka Bayo Ade), a musician who was entertaining his guests at his palatial residence in Benin during his 77th birthday celebration was suddenly kidnapped by unidentified gunmen and later killed.

The carnival-like train had left for the country-home of Igbinedion, Okada, after the launching at the television station where another celebration took place, after which they returned to Benin City.

Disaster struck when the driver of one of the cars, an Audi 80, in the convoy conveying the four lecturers lost control and plunged into the Ovia River, along the Benin-Ore Road, killing all the occupants.

Passengers Escaped Death As Danfo Bus Burnt To Ashes (Phot & Video)

God moves in a mysterious way. Fortunately no one was injured as all passengers managed to run out of the bus before it was completely engulfed. It happened around 8am this morning at CMS, just by BRT Bus Stop Lagos.

Eye witnesses said Lastma officials got to the scene like 3 minutes after the occurrence and they maintained free flow of traffic and contacted the fire service immediately. But till the bus burned out, no fire service was seen.

She was rescued by the Police based at Iguobazuwa, Ovia South Local government area of Edo state at Ofusu where the accident occurred. Annabel who works in her father’s resort located at Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State was abducted by four gunmen last week who forced her into their vehicle after blind folding her.

The kidnappers were heading to an unknown destination when the vehicle in which they conveyed their victim crashed around Ofosu town, along Benin-Lagos highway. The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations, Edo Command, Mr. Agberebi Egbuson disclosed that the Police in Iguobazuwa division on receipt of a distress call of an accident, rushed to the scene.

They were however amazed when four of the five accident victims that they were supposed to rescue took to their heels on sighting the police. “When the policemen approached the scene, four young men around the vehicle took to their heels. We later realized that they were actually kidnappers as a young girl was found inside,” the DCP disclosed.

Narrating her ordeal in the hands of her abductors, Annabel said she was in her father’s hotel in Lagos when four heavily armed men ordered her to a waiting vehicle and later blind folded her while they embarked on a long journey. Annabel who has since re-united with her family could not say what led to the accident or where it occurred but affirmed that police’s arrival scene made her abductors to abandon her.

Road Accident - Car Rams Into Pedestrians, Kills Three

Scene of the Accident

What a tragedy! In Nigeria, you don't have to be in a car to get killed by car accident neither do you have to be in a plane to get killed by air accident. Even our homes are no longer immune to transport accidents how much more our roads.
According to PUNCH, Three people lost their lives while two others were injured on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Lagos on Thursday after a driver,  Oladimeji Olaniyi, lost control of his car, which rammed into the victims.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident occurred around Aluminium Village, inward Iyana-Ipaja, along the expressway.

An eyewitness alleged the driver of the vehicle, a red Peugeot 406 car with registration number, BM214EKY, was drunk and was on high speed when the accident occurred.
The driver reportedly hit and killed three people on the spot while two bystanders at a bus stop sustained injuries.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver suddenly lost control of the wheels and the car rammed into the victims who were on their way from the nearby timber market where they had gone to buy plywood.
Our correspondent also learnt that the vehicle plunged into a gutter after it had crushed the victims.
It was gathered that the driver of the vehicle was almost lynched by a mob but for the timely intervention of policemen attached to the Dopemu division.
He was   immediately  arrested and detained at the station.

Train Crushed Peugeot Bus This Morning in Ikeja

Omg this is indeed a sad story. A driver of a Peugeot J5 this morning sent the occupants in his bus to an early grave. The bus driver is said to have been in a hurry to cross the rail tracks and ignored the fast moving train which was blaring its horn. It happened at ‘Ikeja along’ (you know the express that leads to Oshodi if you are on the right and Iyana Ipaja if you are on the left).

Now this is another one law enforcement agencies need to monitor dearly. Okada riders and some Danfo drivers will still not stop despite the warning signal and even though some LASTMA officers are right in front of them.

Yinka Johnson's Camp Says Lastma Official Was Knocked Down By a Danfo Bus.

On Friday, August 10 2012, Mother of 3 and Stanbic IBTC Bank Employee, Yinka Johnson was driving along the Lekki Expressway. She was stopped by a member of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) who accused her of infringing traffic rules… See Earlier Report Here

At this point, two versions of the story appear. According to LASTMA, Yinka killed one of their staff,Hammed Balogun by driving recklessly while attempting to evade LASTMA officials.
According to Yinka’s family and friends, a Danfo bus hit the victim, Mr Balogun and now Mrs Johnson is being falsely accused.

Statement 1
You might have heard the story going round about the Banker who allegedly killed a LASTMA official by knocking him down with her car.
Eye witnesses on the scene insist that the LASTMA official was in fact knocked down by a Danfo bus he was trying to accost AFTER he arrested the Banker for a traffic offence.
In fact, her car was about being towed as can be seen from the picture on the lastma website. You can also see from the picture posted there that the car was empty. How did she get back in, ram the towing vehicle and killed the LASTMA man?
LASTMA is trying to skew the story as murder and she is currently in detention. Please note that I have seen her car and it doesn’t have a single dent on it.
Kindly spread the word and encourage eye witnesses to come forward and give statements at Panti where she is being held.
She is a mother of 3 (including a 2mth old baby who is with her in detention). I know her personally.
Please note that the incident happened yesterday morning 10/08/2012 at Ikota, Lekki Express Way. She was on her way to work.
Please call 08037076890 if you have information or witnessed what actually happened. We need eye witnesses to counter their lies.

Statement 2
You may have seen the sensational headlines about a banker crushing a Lastma official to death. This is not true.
Yinka was sitting with a Lastma Official in her stationery car which was about to be towed when another Lastma official on the road was run over by a danfo (comercial bus) quite some distance from her car.
Her car bears no signs of impact as evidence and eye witnesses in the nearby taxi park confirmed this.
The stories accusing her of murder were instigated by unscrupulous Lastma officials who are peddling the false charges and trigger-happy journalists who published uncorroborated stories of the incident without visiting the scene, checking with eye witnesses nor checking with the accused.
A traffic offence and murder are certainly 2 different things. Yinka Johnson certainly did not commit murder. She’s a mother of three who instead of spending a peaceful weekend with her family is sleeping in a police station with her 2 month old baby, falsely accused.

LASTMA officers on the road
A female banker, Yinka Johnson, yesterday crushed an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Mr. Hameed Balogun, while driving against the traffic in the Ajah area of the state. This is happening three weeks after another official of the agency, Mustapher Adeleke, was crushed by a bus driver, who was driving against traffic. The incident was recorded a week after the Governor Babatunde Fashola signed the new traffic law.
According to LASTMA authorities, Johnson, who is an employee of Stanbic IBTC, ran over the traffic official when he accosted her for contravening the law...Ghen ghen, this woman will definately be going in for 6 years.3 years for driving against traffic and the rest for murder...Meanwhile my friends in VGC told me it was a DANFO driver that crushed the man and not the lady...Continue to read the full story.

The General Manager, LASTMA, Mr. Babatunde Edu, said after hitting the 33-year-old LASTMA official, Johnson ran into Ikota Estate, Ajah, where security guards prevented LASTMA officials from arresting her.
He said, “Balogun was this morning (yesterday) killed by a banker on the Lekki-Ajah Expressway while carrying out his official assignment at his duty post at Mega City, Ajah.
“The driver, whose identity was revealed by the Auto Inspector device as Yinka Johnson, an employee of IBTC, drove in a green LandRover Jeep with registration number CY 276 LSD against traffic from Mega Chicken inward toll plaza two. “She was intercepted by three officials of LASTMA led by the Head of Operations, Mr. Quayum Asafa, for traffic violation. Johnson started driving recklessly in order to escape and in the process ran over the officer. “The deceased was rushed to Germaine Hospital where he later died as a result of injury sustained from the accident. The corpse was deposited at the Lagos State Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, for autopsy.
“Realising what she had done, she ran and escaped from the scene of the incident into Ikota Estate, Ajah with the security men shutting the gate.
“The situation became riotous as the security attached to the gate refused all entries to open the gate until the intervention of the Area Commander in charge of Area J, Mr. Felix Uwamli, who called for backup before access could be gained into the Estate.

Lagos State Government Bus Burnt After It Crushed Biker

A Lagos state government bus burnt down Monday night after it dragged a biker from a spot at the U-turn Bus stop, near Abule Egba on the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, killing the biker.
Eyewitnesses say the biker died immediately after the accident severed his leg.  The biker bled to death due to injuries sustained as the bus forcefully dragged him on the road for a long distance.

According to witnesses, the bus driver did not know he was dragging the biker until the crowd raised alarm.

One eyewitness says policemen from Abattoir police station in Agege area immediately rescued the bus driver from a possible attacks from youths on the scene. The witness also said another person died with the biker increasing the causalities to two.
All passengers on the bus survived before the bus was engulfed in fire.

Some Lagos State officials at the scene on Tuesday morning said the bus was burnt by aggressive youths but eyewitnesses  insisted that the accident had caused the bus fuel tank to explode following several fire sparks caused by friction between the bus and the bike.
Policemen from the Rapid Response Squad [RRS] who arrived the scene later on Tuesday morning began impounding bikes at the scene as they claimed the victim's bike caused the accident.

A female motorist was burnt to death after a Porsche Cayenne rammed into her car and burst into flames on the M40 motorway.
Drivers watched in horror as the victim, believed to be in her 60s, died after being trapped in her burning car between junctions two and three at Beaconsfield.

She had broken down in the middle of the motorway when a silver Porsche Cayenne careered into the back of her car, unable to stop in time to avoid the collision.
The car was thrown 50 metres along the road leaving a trail of debris, before it burst into flames with the woman trapped inside.
Scores of motorists caught up in queues behind the crash could only look helplessly as the victim, who was alone in her vehicle, died trapped in the inferno on the southbound carriageway of the M40 in Buckinghamshire.Burnt past recognition, police now have the difficult task of identifying her body.
A Thames Valley Police spokesman said that officers were trying to identify the woman so that they could trace her relatives and tell them of the tragedy.
He said: ‘We are making inquiries to try to identify the woman victim in this incident but it is likely this will have to be done from dental records.’
Paramedics took an injured passenger from the Porsche to Wexham Park Hospital in Slough.
Their condition was not yet known.

The victim was heading towards London when she slowed to a stop near the turning lane to Beaconsfield, Bucks.
The Porsche, who was travelling not far behind, was unable to stop in time to avoid the collision.
The woman was already dead when paramedics and an officer from the South Central Ambulance Service rushed to the scene.
20 fire fighters from Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service put out the flames but not until the blaze had burned out the vehicle.
Firefighters erected screens in front of the destroyed car to shield other drivers’ view as they extricated the woman’s charred body from the burned out vehicle.
