BAGA Crisis: Some Displaced Persons Still Hiding In The Bush – NEMA
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says some of the displaced persons during the recent Baga crisis in Borno are still hiding in the bush. This is contained in a statement signed by Mr Abdul kadir Ibrahim, the NEMA Information Officer in the North East Zone, in Yola on Monday.

According to the statement, following the return of normalcy and on arrival into Baga town, the agency discovered that most of the displaced persons are still scattered in the bush.
“Other people are taking refuge in the homes of their relations in the neighbouring communities,” it said.

He said that humanitarian workers led by the agency had commenced distribution of relief items to displaced persons affected by the crisis.
“This is in line with the President Goodluck Jonathan directive to the agency that immediate relief materials should be given to the people.

“The Director General of NEMA, Muhammad Sani Sidi had dispatched a team of officers with the relief and medical items to affected persons in the area,’’ Ibrahim said. “The major task before NEMA is to ensure that people in the bush are relocated to temporary camps,’’ the statement quoted NEMA Director, Search and Rescue, Air Commondore Charles Otebagde as saying.

It also revealed that an immediate rapid assessment was being conducted in collaboration with Red Cross and other voluntary organisations. According to the statements, relief items are being distributed while those with minor injuries are being treated at a temporary camp clinic opened in the area.
The statement said that the communities affected were Bayan Bulabulin, Anguwa Gajagaja, Aliya, Musarin Baga, Kasuwan baga, Layin Yannono.

It appealed to the people to remain calm as no meaningful development could be achieved without peace. The items distributed by the officials together with other humanitarian workers included medical, sanitary, food, household materials and tents.

Meanwhile, the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Garbai, has appealed to humanitarian organisations, corporate organisations and public spirited individuals to provide more relief materials to Baga victims.

Ibn Garbai made this known on Monday in Baga during a sympathy visit to the people of Baga, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno. He said that the victims were in dare need of urgent support due to the magnitude of the disaster.

Ibn Garbai, who presented a cash donation of an undisclosed amount to the victims, commended the state government for its assistance to the victims. Senator Maina Ma’aji, the Senator representing Borno North in the Senate also made similar calls. He urged the Federal Government to deploy doctors and medical supplies to the various camps in the town.

Northern Muslim Youths Warns MEND And Vows To Retaliate If MEND Bombs Mosques

Gambo-Ibrahim-Gujungu1

First of all, are “Northern Muslim Youths” all “Boko Haram” members?
Enraged by last Sunday’s threat by the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta, MEND, to commence bombing of mosques and killing of Muslim clerics as from May 31 over the terror campaign and killing of Christians by the Islamic sect, Boko Haram, northern youths yesterday, promised to deal a deadly blow on the militants should they carry out its devilish plan even as former agitators and clerics in the Niger-Delta differed on planned attack.

Although the Arewa youths did not specify their mode of retaliation, they warned MEND not to arrogate to itself the monopoly of violence.

The northern youths’ warning was handed down by the National President of the Arewa Youths Forum, Alhaji Ibrahim Gambo Gujungu in Abuja.

Gujungu made it clear that the threat by MEND would not in any way deter northerners and other Nigerians from fighting back should they attempt to make real their threat.

The AYF leader said,”the most recent threat by MEND is indeed, unfortunate, callous and counter-productive, especially coming at a time when patriotic Nigerians are making strident effort and sacrifices to resolve the current security challenge.

“MEND, as usual, is putting spanners in the works for unpatriotic selfish economic benefits. It is painful that these elements are threatening more violence despite the colossal amount being paid their leadership and the training of Niger Delta youths abroad by the Federal Government to the obvious disadvantage of other Nigerian youths outside the region.

“MEND and its members are hereby warned that they do not have monopoly of ideas, strength or ability. The youths of the north and other Nigerians are united and shall face them to truncate any of their threats which are aimed at separating Nigerians along religious or ethnic divides for their selfish economic goals.

“It is very sad and mind boggling to note that instead of supporting and ensuring that President Jonathan succeeds in finding a lasting solution to the present security challenge in the north, MEND has re-opened another insecurity theatre in the Niger Delta to cause distraction and make him fail.

“The obvious disrespect, which MEND shows to President Jonathan as not being among those they respect enough to intervene in the ongoing debacle, is food for thought, to say the least,” Gujungu noted.

Some ex-leaders of the militant group contacted by Vanguard, yesterday, opted to keep sealed lips with one of  them, saying, “You know our position on this matter. As far as we concerned, MEND is dead, those threatening anything in the name of MEND are paper tigers.”
However, the spokesperson of the defunct Niger-Delta Liberation Force, NDLF, “Captain” Mark Anthony, threw his weight behind the planned action by MEND, while a prominent activist, Mr. Augustine Ogedengbe, cautioned against retaliatory attacks by any group from the region.

In the words of “Captain” Anthony, “If MEND can carry out their threat, it will be a welcome development, the Christians Boko Haram roasted with bombs in hundreds are human beings. While we were in the creek, we made preparations to pay Boko Haram in their own coin, but Niger-Delta politicians pleaded with us never to carry out operations in the land.

“Now, my hands are tied as Federal Government has granted me amnesty and my group, NDLF, and I have sworn to an oath never to engage in violence. I am now a toothless bulldog and cannot bite,” he said.

Rev Usifo, who opposed the plan by MEND to take up the gauntlet for Christians said, “They should not burn mosques and kill Muslim clerics, I am not in support of that. But I want to say that Christians should arm themselves and also seek the services of security agencies to guard their churches. In a situation where people come to attack them and burn their churches, they should defend themselves”.

Activist, Mr. Ogedengbe, said he would want MEND and any other group claiming to represent Niger-Delta to be mindful of the fact that Boko Haram was fashioned to frustrate the Federal Government, headed by a Niger-Deltan and carrying out reprisal action could precipitate more bloodbaths.

Nigeria is heading for disintegration unless ——Southern Mandate

Meanwhile, the Southern Mandate has warned that sponsors of the sect must halt their activities forthwith, or else the insurgency will plunge Nigeria into disintegration.

The group said in a statement issued in Abuja, yesterday, that the sustained explosions were targeted at discrediting the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.

“We foresee that there are no two ways about it –the consequence of Boko Haram’s present activities is the disintegration of our dear country in the near future”.

“In the circumstances, we wonder why some Nigerians could still regard Boko Haram as an enemy only to President Jonathan and his government. However, it is time to tell ourselves the bitter truth: the earlier all Nigerians from the North and South realize and confront Boko Haram as a common enemy, the better for the unity of Nigeria”, the group said in the statement signed by the group’s President-General and South/South Coordinator,  Tito Zuokumor and Dr. Wilson Omene, respectively.

The group condemned those who blame President Jonathan for the prevailing insecurity without considering the attendant result of sitting on the fence and allowing sectional violence as a tool to score political goals, with which some political figures have been identified.

“Let the truth be told that there is no region or ethnic nationality in Nigeria that is weak. The West, East and South-south all have the capacity to create a similar scenario of deliberate insecurity in their zones to make any administration ungovernable just to score political points.

“And if such acts of artificial insecurity are perpetrated by a group or groups of persons from a part of the country without resolvable aims and objectives other than to waste innocent lives just to deny a particular region the right to attain the presidency or complete the constitutionally stipulated tenure of office, then we have got to check ourselves, apply restraint in whatever we do, and not acting with impunity as is presently the case with some self-seeking politicians fuelling the Boko Haram activities. Otherwise, we are all heading for the doomsday.

“We are all not unaware of the political aim of Boko Haram, but we fail to see beyond the kite which the group and their sponsors are flying in the air and progressively piloting us to disintegration”, Southern Mandate insisted.

It added that “the serial bomb explosions and death of innocent Nigerians are receiving applause from certain quarters today because those behind the barbaric acts believe they are winning the battle against Dr. Jonathan’s presidency, unmindful of the fact that they are laying landmines for the nation’s disintegration.

“The determination of a few selfish individuals seeking the highest political office to “do everything possible, whether good, bad or terrible to unseat President Jonathan” for fear of becoming too old to occupy the presidency if Dr. Jonathan is allowed to remain in office for two terms, must be stopped”.

The group urged all good-spirited Nigerians to support the federal government in tackling the present menace in order to avoid similar bombs exploding from other parts of the country tomorrow.

It claimed that Nigeria’s unity was being preserved by the petro-dollars from crude oil in the Niger Delta region and that the people of that region had borne the brunt of oil production for several decades in the interest of the entire nation.

Destination of all suicide bombers is hell——Sheik Gumi

In a related development, renowned Islamic cleric, Sheik Ahmad Mahmud Gumi has said hell is the destination of all suicide bombers. The cleric, in a sermon monitored yesterday pointed out that while young men commit suicide, they ought to reflect that those leaders who send them to their deaths do not commit suicide or send their children to die in the same way.

Gumi who has been critical of the Boko Haram sect, said in the sermon: “The prophet said the way to Paradise is easy for those that follow his path. Despite this ease of entering Paradise, those that commit suicide for whatever reason have guaranteed for themselves the Hell Fire forever”.

According to him, “People are forbidden to wish for death talks less of committing suicide. Islam is a practicable religion. Whoever therefore will be taken by fanaticism or sickness or depression to kill himself, he has condemned himself to eternity in the hell fire”.

He stressed that whoever will explode himself with explosives for whatever reason or disguise will also continue to be in his explosion in hellfire forever, stressing that this is what the hadith teaches.  Suicides, he warned, are tormented by the same means they employ to kill themselves.

“Today we see young men killing themselves with explosives in the name of Jihad yet they never reflect that those ‘leaders’ that send them to such adventure never commit suicide nor send their children to commit it.”

16 More Soldiers In Connection With The Jaji Bomb Blast Arrested

Military authorities have arrested 16 more soldiers in connection with the November 25 twin bombing of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna State. Some high-ranking officers were among the freshly arrested soldiers.

Also being detained in connection with the terror attacks are four civilians, including three residents of the Jaji cantonment and one outsider. A senior non-commission officer in the barracks was among those arrested. A highly-placed official in the army confirmed this to our reporter in Abuja on Friday.

The source, who pleaded anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter said, “Apart from the first 10 arrests we made, there is an additional 16. Investigations continue on the matter.” When our correspondent contacted the Director of Defence Information, Col. Mohammed Yerima, he said it was the army that could speak on it.

However, the Assistant Public Relations Officer of the Infantry Corps and Centre, Major E.M. Adeniyi, said he was not aware of the development.

Adeniyi, said, “What you are saying is still new to me. I don’t know this one you are talking about.
“Today (Friday) we had the graduation of some of our men: There were young officers’ corps, company commanders’ corps, commanding officers corps, senior infantry non-commissioned officers’ corps, and the infantry non-commissioned officers’ corp. In all, about 260 people graduated from the tactics wing of the Nigerian Army School of infantry.

“We also had 10 participants from Central African Republic.”

The Director of Military Intelligence, Maj. Gen Ahmed Jibril, said on Thursday that the military was holding some people in connection with the Jaji attacks but he was silent on the number of those in custody.

He said while it was true that some people were in custody, the number of those being held could only be made public when the report of the board of inquiries set up by the army and the defence headquarters had been submitted. Both panels are being coordinated by Major-Gen. S.U Abdualkadir, who is the Head of Directorate Army Standard Evaluation at the Nigerian Army Headquarters, Abuja.

The military high command removed the Commandant of the AFCSC, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Kure, and the Commander of the Infantry Corps and Centre, Jaji, Maj. Gen Mohammed Isah, to pave the way for unimpeded investigation into the incident. Air Vice Marshal E.E Osim was appointed to take over from Kure while Major Gen. K.C Osuji replaces Isah.

10 officers and soldiers were earlier arrested over the twin bomb blasts at Jaji. A statement from the Director of Army Public Relations, which put the initial death toll at 11, also stated that 30 people were injured and taken to the hospital.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, had attributed the successful bombing of the military establishment to laxity.

Terrorism: Over 1,000 Nigerians Have Fled To Niger Republic As Refugees - UN
More than 1,000 Nigerians fled to neighbouring Niger Republic after six people were killed in an attack on their village blamed on Islamist group Boko Haram, the United Nations said Thursday.

According to a report, the 1,042 refugees crossed the northern border into the Niger region of Diffa after the November 30 attack, and have been taken in by families in two villages near the regional capital, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a bulletin.

A teacher in the village confirmed the attack to local media. He said the attackers told villagers they were looking for “politicians”and “coldly killed”six people, including a police officer, after the victims were unable to recite verses of the Koran.

A security source said Niger’s army has deployed reinforcements along its border with Nigeria, a focus of worry for Nigerien authorities who have often assured they are taking measures to stop Boko Haram’s activities from spilling over into Niger.

Violence linked to the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria —a country roughly divided between a mainly Muslim north and a predominantly Christian south —is believed to have left some 3,000 people dead there since 2009, including killings by the security forces.

Nigerian Army Accused Of Killing Civilians In Maiduguri - Al Jazeera
Rights groups accuse Joint Task Force in Maiduguri of gross human rights violations in fight against Boko Haram. Human rights groups are accusing Nigeria's Joint Task Force of killing civilians in its fight against the armed group Boko Haram.

The group has claimed responsibility for killing thousands of people since it was founded in 2002. Boko Haram, which means 'Western Education is Forbidden', says it wants to create an Islamic state in Muslim-dominated northern Nigeria. The US has put Boko Haram and its leader Abubakar Shekau on its list of terror organizations.

Al Jazeera's Yvonne Ndege reports from the northern city of Maiduguri, where local people say government forces are killing civilians.

Terrorism: New Sect Claims Responsibility For SARS Headquarters Attack In Abuja

We are still going through the menace of boko haram now another group has sprung up? Are they serious? What the hell is going on? The security situation in Nigeria keeps getting worse with no end in sight.

Contrary to the national belief that the dreaded sect, Boko Haram was responsible for the bombing of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad’s headquarters (SARS) in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, on Monday, another radical Islamist sect- Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The unedited excerpt of the email claiming responsibility reads: “ In the name of Allah most Graciuos most Merciful

“The Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis-sudan is hereby declaring by Allah’s grace to be the responsible for the attack held on 12th Muharram, 1334 – 26th November, 2012, on S.A.R.S. detention facility in Garki area II, Abuja Nigeria.

“Allah SWT has obligated us to help those that are oppressed, especially those oppressions that is taking place in the security cells, prisons and other detention centers etc. and has become part of the main functions and basics that form Jama’atu Ansasrul Muslimina fi Biladissudan.

“We are stating loud and clear that many of those captured by the Nigerian security or by the Christian in Plateau state such as the women and children in Langtang, Yalwan Shandam etc to mention but a few. by Allah’s grace we are matching towards their freedom.

“Lastly, we are calling upon all Muslims to come and joined hands with us in carrying out this noble duty that Allah SWT has commanded us to do, Allah SWT said: “And what is the matter with you that you fight not in the cause of ALLAH, and for the feeble among men, and for women and children oppressed…”. Nisa’i:75.

“Abu Usamatal Ansari (Amir JAMBS).”

It would be recalled that the islamic sect first emerged in opposition to Boko Haram’s tactics about five months ago, declaring that they oppose the killing of innocent non Muslims except “in self defense or if they attacked Muslims like the cases we have in Jos,” but Monday’s attack has cast aspersion on the above claims because innocent non-muslims died in the attack.

Many Boko Haram Members Freed As 40 Gunmen Aattack Abuja Police Detention Facility,

Many Boko Haram Members Freed As 40 Gunmen Aattack Abuja Police Detention Facility,

Forty gunmen suspected to be terrorists in the early hours of Monday stormed the office of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Abuja, where Boko Haram suspects were being held.

Two policemen and one of the gunmen were killed in the incident, the first of its kind in the Federal Capital Territory which had in the past recorded three bomb blasts.

The blasts were on October 1, 2010; June 16, 2011; and August 26, 2011.

At least 30 detainees, including some Boko Haram members, were said to have escaped during the Monday attack on the detention facility.

But the police denied that terror suspects were among the escapees. They also said that 25 of the 30 detainees had so far been rearrested.

The attack occurred barely 24 hours after twin car bomb blasts at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna State.

The army authorities had on Friday declared 19 Boko Haram leaders wanted and offered rewards of between N50m and N10m for information that could lead to their capture.

A source in the police told one of our correspondents that the surprise attack on the detention facility, located around Abattoir, Garki in Abuja was carried out around 2am.

It lasted for some minutes during which heavy weapons were allegedly used by the gunmen.

The senior police officer put the number of the attackers at about 40. “The attackers numbering about 40 came from the bush and attempted to overrun the facility but the valiant policemen on duty repelled them.” the source said.

According to him, one of the attackers was killed and two others arrested.

A mobile police officer, whose name could not be immediately ascertained and a police Inspector, Fakat Zaremi, were killed during the exchange of gunfire.

Emmanuel Domsing, a lawyer, said he was informed early in the morning that his brother, Zaremi, was killed by the gunmen.

He said, “I was called that my elder brother was killed during the attack, but information is scanty on what actually transpired; the family is waiting for a formal report from the police.”

Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, visited the facility around 1pm on Monday. He was briefed by the SARS Commander and the Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Ade Shinaba.

Abubakar, then ordered a high-powered panel headed by a Senior Police Officer to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Some senior military officers were also said to have paid visits to the facility to commiserate with the police on the attack.

When one of our correspondents visited the detention facility, security around the complex was tight as armed policemen turned back all visitors.

A photojournalist with Daily Independent, Jide Oyekunle, was arrested and detained by the police for attempting to take pictures of the SARS office after the invasion by the gunmen.

Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, in a statement said that about 30 suspects had broken out of their cells and attempted to escape but that 25 of them were rearrested through “tactical and coordinated efforts.”

He said, “In the early hours of today, November 26, 2012, gunmen in large number attacked the premises of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command. Policemen on duty responded swiftly and engaged the gunmen in a gunfire that lasted for some minutes, at the end of which the gunmen were successfully repelled.

“However, in the confusion that ensued, about 30 suspects in the detention facility of SARS broke out of the cells and attempted to escape. Tactical and coordinated efforts to re-arrest the fleeing suspects yielded instant result. So far, 25 of the suspects have been rearrested, while five suspects originally held in relation to robbery are currently at large.

“Two policemen died during the operation while two of the attackers have been arrested. It needs to be emphasised here that no suspect held for terror- related charges, escaped from SARS detention facilities. No explosives or IED-related materials were used in the botched attack.

“Meanwhile, the IG has personally visited the scene of the incident to assess the situation and has ordered water-tight security around all government and Police-related facilities nationwide.”
The police appealed for calm and assured the public of their preparedness to protect lives and properties.

After the attack, security, which had been relaxed in Abuja following a reduction in bombings was hurriedly beefed up.

At the Villa Junction, near the Federal Secretariat, about 10 soldiers were seen by our correspondent checking vehicles plying the area.

Also, many of the gates which were previously manned by non-uniformed security personnel, were guarded by policemen.

Policemen guarding the force headquarters were also on the alert as they thoroughly searched visitors.
Security was also beefed up at the airport road, where soldiers searched vehicles.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, last Thursday had said that inter-agency collaboration helped security agencies to foil a terror attack in the country recently.

The COAS, who visited the Force Headquarters in Abuja, said,”Within the last one week, we have recovered nothing less than 30 assorted weapons; we have recovered money hidden in the engine compartment of vehicles by these terrorists.

“We have recovered both vehicles prepared for bombing and attacks. So I want to tell you that the military and police are very professional.”

5 Dead, Churches And Mosque Burnt, Dusk to Dawn Curfew In Fresh Religious Crisis In Taraba State

5 Dead, Churches And Mosque Burnt, Dusk to Dawn Curfew In Fresh Religious Crisis In Taraba State

Troops were yesterday deployed in a Taraba State community following the outbreak of religious crisis in which five people died. A church vigilance group reportedly killed a man who insisted on going through the checkpoint set up to prevent attacks on the church building during service. This triggered riots that led to the death of four people.

The clash was reportedly between Christian and Muslim youths in Ibi Local Government Area of the state. Rioters burnt down houses and shops in the remote area of Ibi, about 230 kilometres from the state capital of Jalingo, said Ibi Local Government Chairman Isiaku Adamu.

Abubakar Bello, an Ibi resident, told The Associated Press (AP) that churches and mosques were also torched as he stood outside his home to protect it. He said residents were fleeing the town. A Taraba State government spokesman, Emmanuel Bello, said authorities had sent troops to the area to quell the violence. Only a few days ago, an innocent taxi driver was allegedly killed by military men in the state, after nine other people were abducted in Jalingo by unknown gunmen. Six of the nine abducted persons were found dead a day after their abduction.

The insecurity in Taraba continued to worsen when yesterday, violence broke out in Ibi.
Police Spokesman Amos Olaoye confirmed the crisis, saying “our men are already there to maintain law and order.”

The Chairman of the Local Government said he is aware that “one person was killed in the crisis”.
He said: “From all indications, the crisis is no longer a religious skirmish. It is a political crisis.
“I am yet to visit the crisis area, but security men, including soldiers, have been drafted to the area to maintain law and order”.

An eye witness told a source that even law enforcement agents drafted to the area were finding it difficult to contain the situation.

A source said the violence started in a small way, but snowballed into a political crisis. The source said: “It could be a retaliation by the offended Muslim. I saw more than five persons killed. Many others were injured; they are receiving treatment in the hospital.

“I also saw the Christian Reformed Church of Nigeria (CRCN) on fire. For now, I don’t know the number of churches and mosques that have been razed.”

Rhipplemdia however gathered that a dusk-to-dawn curfew has been imposed in the state by authorities, furthermore security forces have been instructed to shoot anyone who disregards the ban on movements.
