Road Safety: Igbinedion University Loses 4 Lecturer Too Auto Crashs

The 78th birthday celebration of business magnate and father of Lucky Igbindeion, former governor of Edo State, Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, assumed a disastrous dimension yesterday as one of the vehicles in his entourage plunged into the Ovia River, killing the four occupants instantly. The casualties whose identities could not be ascertained at press time were said to be lecturers of Igbinedion University, Okada, who travelled with Chief Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom, who earlier in the day launched his Benin-based Independent Television into satellite for viewing in 104 countries.

Three years ago, during his 75th birthday celebration, one of his staff died in an accident, while running an errand for the Benin high chief. Also last year, Omoregbe Okpenye (aka Bayo Ade), a musician who was entertaining his guests at his palatial residence in Benin during his 77th birthday celebration was suddenly kidnapped by unidentified gunmen and later killed.

The carnival-like train had left for the country-home of Igbinedion, Okada, after the launching at the television station where another celebration took place, after which they returned to Benin City.

Disaster struck when the driver of one of the cars, an Audi 80, in the convoy conveying the four lecturers lost control and plunged into the Ovia River, along the Benin-Ore Road, killing all the occupants.

UPDATE: Sunday Clash At Igbinedion University Caused By Quarrel Over Female Student

 

 

The authorities of Igbinedion University, Okada in Edo, said on Monday that a quarrel over a female student by two rival groups sparked Sunday’s clash at the institution. The authorities, however, denied that any student was beheaded.

 

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Eghosa Osaghea, who made the disclosure while speaking with journalists at Okada, confirmed that six students were injured during the fracas.

Osaghae, who said preliminary investigation revealed that a female student was at the centre of the quarrel between the warring groups in the institution, also denied media reports that there were sporadic shootings on campus during the clash....The picture of the beheaded student when you continue.

He said that the state Commissioner of Police, Olayinka Balogun, immediately visited the institution to assess the situation and found that the situation was already under control.

“The fact of the matter is that in the early hours of Sunday, there was a misunderstanding among students following the damage to the vehicle of one of them outside the university campus in Okada town.

“This unfortunately elicited unwarranted reprisal that involved damage to other vehicles by the aggrieved students and friends.

“Both actions ended up in agitation and skirmishes, but thankfully no life was lost.

“We gathered it was a boyfriend and girlfriend issues. It was a retaliatory attack.’’

Osaghae said that the injured students had been treated and discharged.

He said that contrary to media reports, those undergoing training at the institution were not ex-militants, but youths from the Niger Delta region sponsored under the Youth Empowerment Programme in the Niger Delta Masterplan.

The vice chancellor said that those referred to as ex-militants were normal students of the institution who were being paid by the Federal Government. (NAN)

Ex-militants Invaded Igbinedion University This Morning

Ex-militants invaded their school by 5am this morning (they are still there at the time of filing this report). The are destroying cars and macheting people. Several of the male students have been injured. They've also blocked the main gate of the school so no one can come in or go out!

There's a lot of chaos going on in the school right now and the students are scared to the death as the militants have gained access into one of the girls hostel.

Please we are calling on relevant authorities to go to the school right now and help these students. Will tell you all later why the school was invaded. Right now let's try and help these students. Call anyone you know that can be of help...

Update: The school is now calm. No life was lost but several students were injured. New reports suggest it was a clash between students and ex-militants who are also students of the school.

Chioma is presently in the hospital receiving treatment for her near fatal wounds

Reports has that an incident happened in Igbinedion Univeristy, Okada, Edo State involving two room mates, Chioma Onyeagwe and Hope Amadi. They had a fight over a shirt, and one of them nearly lost her life.

According to reports, Hope Amadi borrowed Chioma's cloth and refused to return it for many days. When Chioma asked for her cloth back on Tuesday June 5th, Hope allegedly became extremely aggressive and the two girls got into serious argument. Then a fight ensued. Witnesses say Hope Amadi picked up scissors from their room and stabbed Chioma seven times on the neck, arm and other places. Chioma was rushed to the Igbinedion University Teaching Hospital, where doctors reported that Chioma was stabbed on her artery, and that if she hadn't been rushed to the hospital when she was, she would have died.

Hope Amadi has been suspended from school. She should be properly punished if there is not other controverting twist to the story.

 

Chioma gave her shirt to Hope to wear to look good and this is how she was paid back. First of all women and fashion, *never mind that* Hope almost murdered someone over the person's kind gesture, hmmm na wa o! People can be so amazing for the despicable reason. People wont cut their coat according to their cloth. Covetousness of the highest degree. I pity the boyfriend, she must've borrowed his blackberry and refused to return it.
