Interview: Dbanj Speaks On Illuminati, Genevieve, Don Jazzy, Etc

In a major interview to the Lagos State based radio station, Cool FM, Mo Hits, DB/Good Music/Mercury/IDJ artiste, Dapo Oyebanjo, popularly called D’banj, sought to lay to rest various allegations and rumours being peddled about him.

The artiste also spoke on chances of reconciling with former partner and friend Don Jazzy. Asked if there were chances that both parties may reconcile, he said: “We can always work together, and Don Jazzy still produced some songs on my forthcoming album. Yes, we can work together in future. Maybe a big company can pay a lot of money for us to perform, and yes, it has to be a lot of money for me.”

Although the separation remains fresh in the minds of the public since the break-up made public in March this year, the singer appeared to be still be nursing the wounds. He appeared overwhelmed with emotions when the interviewer referred to Don Jazzy as his friend. To this he replied, “What do you guys call friends? I mean, I had friends for nine years, and you guys saw what happened after the divorce. I lost custody of my children apart from the one I had out of wedlock.”

D’banj also said he was boss of defunct Mo Hits Record by claiming that it was his record label D’Banj (DB) Records that went into partnership with Kanye West’s G.O.O.D, and not Mo’Hit.
Ever since the singer was officially signed on to West’s G.O.O.D music label in July, he was rumoured to have joined the dreaded Iluminati Cult, which is alleged to be home to a number of American celebrities, including West.

In defence, D’banj said, “I don’t know anything about the Illuminati. When I wanted to travel out of Nigeria for the first time, I collected my international passport from Bishop David Oyedepo. That shows that I owe my success to God. If my success is too fast for people or they cannot understand it, please don’t attribute it to illuminati. I feel very offended when that is being said, because it simply translates to giving God’s glory to another person which He does not share with anyone. God will strike anyone who attributes my success to someone else.”

To the allegations of an existing relationship with Nollywood actress, Genevieve Nnaji, he said, “I am very single, and Genevieve is my friend. I have been saying this for over a year since we shot the Fall in Love video. Can’t you people just see fine boy and fine girl in a video kissing each other and not think anyhow?”

Although the singer, who released his debut album “No Long Thing” in 2005, was recently featured on West’s Cruel Summer CD inlay and a couple of other singles, he has been criticised for ‘leaving his kingship in Nigeria to become a prince in America.’

Amidst laughter, D’banj replied, “Did I change the crown? I only carried my crown to the US. People are just confused but the truth is I am still a king wherever I am. Being in a different country and culture I had to study the environment which is what I am still doing. I actually thought I would release my album in America, but my label thought UK would be better because I have a bigger fan base there. I weighed my options, remember everything did not come from me, so I had to do what I did to move on.”

The singer, who revealed that his mother allowed him to travel to the UK in 2002 with a condition that he would spend just two months there, describes social media network as platform for idle talk.
“I am too busy for social media, please. If you people want to talk to me go to TV or radio, I don’t go to social media except I have something to say. I never give out recharge cards on Twitter (laughs), even when I was with Globacom, I never did that. If you want to do that, why not help a charity instead?”

My Success Today Is Unconnected With Illuminati - Dbanj

"The reason why I am successful today is because of God. So if you can't understand my success or if it's too fast for you, please don't classify it as Illuminati. It is very annoying and God might strike you down, because he would not share his glory with any 'family' - D'banj said in a recent interview.

Ok na, you all have heard it.

Aluu 4: DBanj Pays Tribute To Slain UNIPORT Students

Nigeria’s Pop icon, has added his voice to the growing list of eminent Nigerians that have already spoken about the provocating murder of the UNIPORT students.Yesterday, MI Abaga blogged his feelings on the tragedy and today, the kokomaster has aired his very thought provoking and passionate view as a Youth Ambassador and as a Nigerian.

In his words.....

They were my brothers…and yours.
Four days ago, I woke up to yet another unspeakable tragedy.

Four young men, all undergraduates, brimming with great dreams, unfulfilled aspirations and a promising future were killed. To express the depth of my pain and shock at their murder is impossible. And understanding how events could have degenerated to this level is truthfully beyond me.
Lloyd, Ugo, Tekana and Chidiaka

Four promising young men whose lives were interwoven in one way or the other with yours and mine. I mourn deeply with the families of these young men because this is OUR collective loss. They were our colleagues, our classmates, our neighbors, our brothers… our friends.

We are NOT a nation of barbarians. We CAN follow due processes and procedures. We MUST fight together as ONE NATION to ensure that Justice as a whole is served, and as a PROCESS, is duly followed-ALWAYS.

We can only try to make meaning of this senseless tragedy by ensuring that this WILL not happen again, by affirming that the pursuit of justice does not in any way entitle any of us to the willful elimination of other people’s lives and by ensuring that we, as youths, do not destroy the honorable mantle placed on us as the future of our nation, by eliminating our present.

Aluu 4 and Mubi 40, Rest In Perfect Peace.
God Bless Nigeria

Is Scapegoat Dbanj In Love With Adama Idimi?

According to MAESTROMEDIA something sizzling might be on going between Nigeria's Mr Entertainer , who is also one of Africa's biggest Music Star's- THE ONE,THE ONLY-D Banj and one of the gloriously gorgeous daughters of Maiduguri based Multi-Millionaire, Alhaji Mohammed Indimi, who is also General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida's in-law. So hot is the supposed relationship between Dapo and Adama that some are speculating it might become something more serious.

The main reason many believe something hot and sweet might be going on is related to the tweets between the 2 friends. Adama Indimi who would pass for a beauty queen anyday, is one of the very many daughters of Alhaji Indimi and she is a student at Lynn University, a private co-educational institution in Boca Raton, Florida, USA founded in 1962. Adama and another sister are currently studying in the school, while 3 of her elder sisters have already graduated from the same school.

Back to the gist itself that something might be going on started with this tweet from D'banj kokomaster @iamdbanj on August 13, 2012 - On my way to club icon w/@NaetoC and the crew! 2nyt we drinking 2 celebrate my baby @Presido_Adama happy birthday love!

Looking at it, it could be that Adama is one of his biggest fans. Also as a superstar he would have loads of female friends/fans that he might be calling love. D banj is one star that has being linked with a few other stars- Genevieve Nnaji, Nadia Buari and others, so what's so fantastic about this one then.

Leading up to D'banj's massive London concert on Bank Holiday Monday, August 27, 2012, Adama again tweeted ''Excited''. Another innocent expression, we think, then that was followed on the day after the concert by another tweet ''You make me do happy'' This was followed by pictures of first herself and his dancers backstage, followed by a picture of the supposed love-birds together looking very sweet together. Mind you all Adama flew in to London from either her base in the US or from Nigeria for the concert.

On August 29, 2012 she posted this - Happy love, happy laugh, happy soul! And afterwards ''You make me do happy! Twas also on that day, that she posted this - When mumsi said ''I like your new Hannah Montana remix'' and followed it with a picture on instagram. So this allows us to ask the Million dollars question- Is D'banj finally hooked? If so when would it be official?

I just dey watch

D'Banj's Hammersmith Apollo, London Concert As Reviewed Guardian UK

As he's the figurehead of Nigerian Afrobeats, it feels appropriate that D'banj's debut UK headline show takes place on the final day of the Notting Hill carnival. Alongside the usual dancehall and soca, a good proportion of the anthems that fuelled this year's sound systems and floats are the hits that have propelled the rise of Afrobeats in the UK: Atumpan's The Thing, Ice Prince's Oleku and, of course, D'Banj's own Oliver Twist, a song of such popular reach that it even made it on to EastEnders.

Keeping that carnival spirit going is D'Banj's MO tonight, as is that of a significant proportion of the audience, who have hotfooted it down the road from the carnival. As an entertainer, D'Banj treads the line between suave and rambunctious with ease: his dapper yellow-lapelled blazer is swiftly shed as he starts to rival his own dancers in snake-hipped, low-grinding ability, and the gold chain follows as he plunges off stage for a spot of crowd-surfing. By the show's climax, D'Banj is half-naked and essaying moves that seem to refer mostly to the title of his forthcoming album, Mr Endowed.

After a late entrance compounded by technical difficulties leaves the crowd slightly restless, D'Banj may feel putting that level of work in is necessary – but it transpires that the music does the trick just as well. "This is not a fluke," he announces midway through the show, perhaps mindful that not everyone present is aware of his seven-year career before Oliver Twist. Tonight, though, his older material goes down almost as well, from the call-and-response of Why Me to the lovelorn Scapegoat, and D'Banj bridges the gap between his more lilting, organic songs and his recent tougher, trancier dance-floor anthems with ease. His between-song patter has a tendency to ramble, but the show's culmination in Oliver Twist is stellar proof that an international hit can be engineered with ease if based around a resonant, inarguable statement such as "I like Beyoncé".

Davido Won’t Perform at D’banj’s Uk Concert

I regret to let you know that I will not be performing along side my most respected big brother and friend D’BANJ at the scheduled show of August 27, 2012 in London.

I am both a Nigerian citizen, as well as an American citizen, I carry both the Nigerian and the American passports. As an American citizen, I do not require a visa to enter the United Kingdom, however I require a work permit in the UK for any paid performance such as the scheduled August 27, 2012 in London, that is the law in the United Kingdom. Click to continue reading…

I applied for a work permit at the British Embassy in Abuja/Lagos but unfortunately up till the close of business on Friday August 24, 2012 I was unable to obtain a work permit, as a result I have to cancel my performance and my trip to the United Kingdom altogether.

I apologize for the inconvenience and the disappointment, but be rest assured that I will make it up to you all on a future date. You will agree with me that it is better to be law abiding at all times and in every jurisdiction.

Finally, please go out en mass to support the Koko Master (D’BANJ) and have a wonderful night on August 27, 2012.

Warm Regards
David Adedeji Adeleke aka DAVIDO

Kanye West Factor: Dbanj To Reconcile With Don Jazzy Or Forget It Good Music Deals

DB Records owner and pop artiste D’Banj is desperately trying to reconcile with his former Mo’ Hits partner Don Jazzy. In a bid to get his former maverick producer back, D’Banj asked Kanye West to talk to Don Jazzy. A few months ago the rap superstar called Don Jazzy to try and get the two Mo’ Hits owners to forget the past and work again. Our source who is close to both D’Banj and Don Jazzy confirms this to be true and says that D’Banj’s attempts to get Don Jazzy back has been going on for a sometime.

Our news story also coincides with the Kanye West, Don Jazzy and D’Banj story in today’s edition of City People. According to the magazine, “Kanye West, believed to be at the center of the controversy that led to their fight is making efforts to reconcile them…Kanye West was not aware of the fight between D’Banj and Don Jazzy until 3 months ago and has been trying to get them together.”
The City People story goes on to say that “while he was in the studio with D’Banj some weeks back working on the remix of “Scapegoat” he brought the topic up again and asked D’banj why Don Jazzy was not in the US with him working on the song. D’Banj was said to have told him that they are still friends but work on different platforms now. Kanye was said not to be happy about the fact that his name was in the internet as one of the reasons the duo fell apart. He insists they get back together if he has to keep working with D’banj. He prompted D’Banj to once again try and make up with Don Jazzy

“Recently D’Banj invited Kanye West to come to Nigeria for the video shoot of “Scape Goat” remix he did with Kanye. Kanye accepted but gave a strict condition that he will come only after he must have reconciled with Don Jazzy who must also be in the video.”
According to the City People story, after several attempts by D’Banj, Don Jazzy agreed to appear in the video on a condition that he gets paid for his appearance.

Sh!t has hit the fan....

Tuface, D’banj, MI, Wizkid, Towa Savage Others Thrill at Star Re-Launch Party

Marketing Director Mr. Walter Drenth, Managing Director Mr. Nicolas Vervelde, Sales Director Mr. Hubert Eze and HR Director Mr. Victor Famuyibo, all of Nigerian Breweries Plc during the re-launch of STAR Lager beer in Lagos.
It has not happened for a long time where you will see some of the best artistes Nigeria parades at a single event to honour a brand, but that was exactly what happened when Star lager beer paraded Tuface Idibia, D’banj, MI, Wizkid and Tiwa Savage at the Star re-launch party. The Expo Centre of Eko Hotel and Suites where the event held was filled to capacity with more than 6,000 consumers’ of Star.

The first performance of the evening was from MI. He thrilled the audience with his hit songs, ‘African rapper’ and ‘Action film.’ that made them request for more. The second performance was from the rave of the moment music act, Wizkid who thrilled audience with songs like “Holla at your Boy”, “Love my baby,” ‘I love my baby’ among other acts. Tiwa Salvage, a female act with MARVIN records was not left out as she hit the stage with her Azonto dancing steps that got applauds of the audience. She followed it with her popular hit track, ‘Kele kele love.’

                                                                     MI and D'banj

The audience was ecstatic when Tuface came on stage with ‘Above and beyond’ which saw the award winning act mixing freely with the crowd. As the audience kept on asking for more, Tuface dished out two of his popular tracks, ‘Implication’ and ‘As you see me so.’ His act showed why he is a popular artiste.

Just when the audience thought they have seen it all and the curtain would soon fall, D’banj who made his first public appearance after his issue with his former partner, Don Jazzy. D’banj appeared from the midst of the crowd against the expectation of the audience who thought he’ll appear like others from the stage. For close to an hour he held the audience spelt bound with entertaining acts and songs that are ever green from his collections. They include, ‘Oliver Twist’ and ‘Scape goat.’

A special new song titled “Let’s get the Party Started” composed by the five artiste for Star lager beer sent the crowd screaming and was followed by the highlight of the night, the unveiling of Star lager beer new look by D’banj, Wizkid, Tiwa Salvage and MI. The new payoff of Star lager beer, “shine on” was what was on the lips of fun lovers as they savour the occasion with consumption of chilled bottles of star lager beer. The new look Star now comes in a 3D authenticity logo watermarked with tiny stars, it also has a re-designed back label with revised brand message and new crown cork with upgraded 3Dlogo and logo ring, blue body label and neck foil.

Speaking at the star studded event which attracted more than 6,000 select consumers’  Mr Nicolaas Vervelde, Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries plc said there is no doubt that Star lager beer is a distinct market leader that will always be there. “Star did not start to shine now; it has always led the market. It was renewed in 1956 and in 1974 it became the first beer brand to introduce neck label and in 2007, it took a bold innovative stride by introducing packaging in Cans, so star has always been with Nigeria.”

Walter Drenth, Marketing Director of NB plc, who also spoke at the epoch making event said superior product quality has been the driving force of Star; he added that consumers have come to trust the brand because of its consistent quality over the years. The brand has the heritage of being brewed under strict quality standards since 1949 and the consumer promise remains uncompromised. Another factor is the strong distribution network.  The brand has a very strong distribution footprint which spans the length and breadth of Nigeria. It is therefore not by accident that the ever refreshing Star is widely distributed and readily available across the country and is within the reach of consumers. The Star brand, right from when it was initiated, has maintained a constant message of bringing “brightness” to its consumers.  This is always reflected in all its marketing campaigns.

Drenth stressed that another factor that adds to Star’s equity is the fact that it has one of the best communications across all media. This Communication has been consistent over the years. Again, this does not happen by accident. It is a well thought out process that has made the brand young and fresh despite the fact that it has been around for 63 years. Star is one of the best run brands to come out of Nigeria.

Innovation, he pointed out, also plays a fundamental part in the development of the Star brand over the years. Another factor any discerned brand analyst can identify is that Star has been noted for churning out adverts which has consistently projected the superior quality of the brand over the years. Right from the beginning, the brand made a strong statement, from the first campaign slogan of “Ah! Star – Beer at its best” introduced in 1949 through the “Brightness” campaign of the 1970s/80s, to the “Turn to Star – The ideal brew” campaign, unveiled in 1989, to the “Live the Brighter Life In Style – Star Ahead on Taste” campaign of the 1990’s and then to the campaigns of “Never A Dull Moment with Star”, “Share the Brighter Life”,  “Shine Shine Bobo” and “Let’s get the party STARted”, it is clear that the advertising campaign development history of Star has been consistent in creating a mythical halo for the brand. The rave-making campaign that heralded the STAR Bottle change in 2000 is still fresh in the mind of consumers. The ‘Star Dance’ and Shine Shine Bobo are equally award winning materials.

On his part, Sampson Oloche, Senior Brand Manager Star added that “As a brand with mass appeal, there is a need to constantly engage with consumers in a bid to meeting their needs and understanding their aspirations. Star relies on different media and stakeholder touch points in order to reach its target audience. Our consumer engagement platforms are some of the most robust in the country today. From Star Quest to Star Trek to Star Mega Jam it is always meeting the consumer where he is and always responding to his need to have a brighter life always. In fact, consumers are charged with the responsibility of picking the foreign act they want to have for the popular Star Mega Jam”.

Oloche added that the platforms that the brand provides have been a veritable avenue for younger adults to express themselves and showcase their talents.  The brand is thus seen as giving back to the society by empowering the youths, most of whom may never have had the opportunity to know they even have hidden talents. “You remember KC Presh? They were the first winners of Star Quest and they are still a force to be reckoned with in Nigerian music today in their individual capacities. So the activation provides a good platform for aspiring musical artistes seeking to make impact in the industry.

On the onslaught of competition, he said “We will always be steps ahead of competition because we have vibrant marketing support which enables us to consistently rejuvenate the brand in all consumer touch points i.e. packaging, communication, promotions and advertising to ensure its relevance and authority. In arriving at this we rely on consumer and market insight which in turn drives and leads to constant consumer-led innovations. You have your winning formula when you have an effective distribution network.”
