PHCN Faulty High Tension Cable Electrocutes An Okada Rider
Fashola is at one corner trying to make okada riders extinct in Lagos to the detriment of the masses that depend on them for transportation and source of income, and now PHCN faulty cable is at another corner killing okada rider. Is the faulty high tension cable an agent of Gov Fashola?

Saturday evening was a cool evening for me but one man suspected to be an okada rider wasn’t so lucky as he was electrocuted to death in Ejigbo, Lagos State.

The deceased, identified as Oche Samuel, was said to have met his death at the shop of a motorcycle mechanic in the area. It was learnt that the deceased had taken his bike for repairs before the sad incident.

An eyewitness, who identified himself only as Kayode, said as Samuel entered into the shop, a Power Holding Company of Nigeria high tension cable sparked and fell on Ailegun Road, off Ronik College. Kayode said when the incident happened, tension was heightened in the area, resulting in residents running helter-skelter.

He said in the ensuing confusion, Samuel marched on some of the fallen cables and he was electrocuted. The eyewitness said fear of being electrocuted prevented sympathisers from giving Samuel first aid. He said by the time an official of the PHCN arrived the scene for on-the-spot assessment, Samuel had died.

Kayode said it was through the deceased’s mobile phone they were able to get his brother. He said when the deceased’s brother came, he took the corpse to the mortuary. As of 8.30pm on Saturday, the fire on the pole was still not put out.

Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Police Command, Ngozi Braide, who confirmed the incident, told our correspondent on the phone on Sunday that the deceased was an okada rider, who went to repair his motorcycle when the incident occurred.

“The man, an okada rider went to a mechanic workshop to repair his motorcycle. It was during the time that the electric pole started to spark. In the process, he was electrocuted. His corpse has been deposited at the morgue of General Hospital, Isolo,” she said.

PHCN is grossly ineffective and inefficient in supplying power to the teeming users but they just have enough on their faulty high tension cables to kill unsuspecting citizens. May his soul rest in peace.

PHCN staff electrocuted on a pole

The body of Isaac dangling from the electricity pole.

The Satellite neighbourhood/NTA Road in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, was in chaos over the weekend, as a man identified as Mr Samuel Job Isaac a PHCN staff was electrocuted while working on an electrical fault in the area.

Isaac, who died on the spot, was said to be a worker of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). The deceased, said to be an Electrical/Electronics Engineering graduate of the Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke, allegedly met his death when a high tension cable landed on him while trying to repair a fault on the electrical pole.

His body, which was badly burnt, was said to have been deposited at the morgue of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti.

The public relations officer of the Ekiti PHCN district, Mr Kayode Brown, said the victim was working on the feeder to detect fault on the high tension, which had caused power outage in the area.

He said Isaac has been an employee of PHCN for about three years ago and had cognate experience to handle such electrical work, adding that the victim might have died of what he called “back-feed” on the high tension.

Chairman of Ado Local Government Area of the state, Mr Sunday Ibitoye, who visited the scene of the incident, expressed shock about the incident.

I hear they want to or the authorities in charge have increased power tariff when power supply is going the opposite direction. Can you imagine the noise and air pollution this battalion from just one section of just one compound generates let alone a whole street, city, local government area, state and entire nation, its madness. Is the ozone layer still remaining?

Nigeria - 54 Investors Bid For Electricity Distribution Companies

The Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) has received technical and financial proposals from 54 potential investors interested in buying Nigeria’s electricity distribution companies.
This is in keeping with the timeline for the privatisation of the distribution companies created from the unbundling of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), which had July 31, 2012 as deadline for receipt of technical and financial bids from the potential investors. Confirming yesterday local report, the two electricity distribution companies in Lagos, the Eko and Ikeja distributing stations, received the most bids.
The breakdown of the bids received at deadline for the eleven distribution companies slated for privatisation shows that the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company plc received five (5) bids from prom prospective investors; Benin Electricity Distribution Company plc seven (7) bids; Enugu Electricity Distribution Company plc four (4) bids; Eko Electricity Distribution Company nine (9) bids; Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company plc seven (7) bids; Ikeja electricity Distribution Company ten (10) bids; Jos Electricity Distribution Company plc two (2) bids; Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company plc two (2) bids; Kano Electricity Distribution Company plc two (2) bids; Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company plc three (3) bids; and Yola Electricity Distribution Company plc three (3) bids.
Prospective core investors, who must be local and/or international power distributors or investors with power distributors as technical partners, will be responsible for operating the distribution companies, making the necessary investments to improve the distribution network and customer service in line with the objectives of the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Local news reported yesterday that Oando Gas and Power, Honeywell, and Gumco are among local and international firms to submit bids for the acquisition of the eleven electricity distribution companies scattered across the country. The three companies are going for Eko and Ikeja electricity distribution firms among the eleven offered for sale. ENL Consortium, one of the companies currently operating as concessionaire at the Nigerian port, is also said to be one of those that are interested in the electricity firms.
The transaction timeline reveals that the evaluation of the technical bids will take place between August 14 and 28, 2012. The National Council on Privatisation (NCP) will approve the results of the technical evaluation by September 11, 2012.
Inter-State Electricity Limited, is a joint venture between Chrome Energy Consultium and Power House International Limited also submitted bid within deadline by Tuesday. The deadline for the shortlisted bidders for generation companies to submit their letters of credit is September 18, 2012, while October 2, 2012 is the deadline for shortlisted bidders for distribution companies.
Consequently, NCP’s approval will pave way for the opening of financial bids of the shortlisted investors. The BPE will on September 25, 2012 open the financial bids of prospective investors for the generating companies, while October 10, 2012 is the date for the opening of the financial bids for the distribution companies. Equally, the announcement of the preferred bidders for the generating companies is October 9, 2012, while October 23, 2012 is the date for the announcement of the preferred bidders for the distribution companies.
The Nigerian electricity industry has been unbundled into generation and distribution companies and a single transmission company with a view to encouraging private sector participation and attracting foreign and local investment into the Nigerian power sector to ensure economic and reliable electricity supply.
