Hired Pilot Warned Gov. Suntai Not To Fly But He Ignored It - Report

REPORTS REACHING RHIPPLEMEDIA has it that the recent crash of Cessna 208, a private jet piloted by Governor Danbaba Suntai of Taraba State could have been prevented if he had heeded the professional advice of his hired pilot not to fly to Yola airport at sunset.
According to reports, the hired pilot had earlier warned the governor against flying to the airport when it was obvious that they could not meet with the visual flight mandatory for that type of aircraft which is not in the instrument flight category.
It was learnt that this advice was allegedly jettisoned
by Governor Suntai who was said to have immediately taken over the cockpit and
embarked on the ill-fated journey with the said pilot refusing to join the
flight because of the obvious risk.
Yola airport is not in the category of airports where
flights can be operated for 24 hours because it is not well-equipped which
makes it a no go area after 6.00 p.m.
Only Lagos, Kano, Abuja and Port Harcourt are on 24-hour
flight operations. According to the country's aviation policy, small jets like
the Cessna plane Governor Suntai piloted on the day in question was only
allowed to fly based on visuals from morning to 6.00 p.m. daily.
And once the sun sets, it is always difficult to fly smaller
aircraft like the governor's plane.
The governor, who has since been flown to Germany foradequate treatment in view of the injury he sustained in the crash, obtained a
private pilot licence from the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria,
which allows him to fly himself.
The ill-fated plane which departed Jalingo, Taraba State,
for Yola, Adamawa State, was reported to have lost contact with the Yola
Control Tower (1720Z) and field in sight at 38 miles, estimating landing at
1730Z before crashing

THE DELTA STATE police command have arrested a Chief Accountant attached to the Delta State University (DELSU) Abraka and another staff of the Bursary department for allegedly defrauding the university of over N21 million, even as four fake licensing officers who specialize in issuing fake licences to unsuspecting motorists were picked up at the premises of the State Licensing office in Asaba.
The command’s spokesman, Mr. Charles Muka confirmed the two incidents saying that the chief accountant of the university and another staff of the bursary department were arrested “for defrauding DELSU of over N21 million”.
Muka further stated that “the suspects, (names withheld) on interrogation confessed stating that they used the money to buy cars and landed property. Items recovered from them include Nisan car, a Jeep, LCD TV, 400,000 cash, lands and buildings. They will soon be arraigned in court”, he added.
On the arrest of four fake licensing officers, Muka said, “we (police) also arrested four persons for issuance of fake road worthiness and insurance. The suspects on information were rounded up in motor licence office premises by the men of Police ‘A’ Division Asaba where they deceive customers into patronising them”.
Ocean Surge, The 'Rhipple' Effect Of HURRICANE SANDY May Hit Lagos In 7 Days

Following the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy, currently ravaging some parts of the United States of America, the Lagos State Government, yesterday alerted residents of a possible ripple effect of the hurricane such as ocean surge on the state’s coastal areas within the next seven days.
The alert was given by the state Commissioner for Waterfront and Infrastructure Development, Prince Segun Oniru; Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Lateef Ibirogba as well as Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Mr. Taofeek Folami, at a joint media briefing in Alausa, Ikeja. It would be recalled that an Ocean surge occurred on August 17 at Kuramo Beach, Victoria Island and claimed 15 lives.
However, a professor of climatology at the University of
Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Professor RNC Anyadike, countered that Nigeria could not
suffer any ripple effect from hurricane sandy.
Asked if Lagos could suffer ripple effects from Hurricane
Sandy, Anyadike said: “It is not possible. We don’t have hurricanes in West
Africa.
“Meanwhile, Hurricane Sandy has already hit land, it will
soon dissipate. What kind of ripple effect are they talking about? Do you know
how far we are from New York?
“The only thing we are likely to experience is heavy
rainfall occasioned by climate change not hurricane.”
Oniru attributed the likely ripple effect of the
Hurricane to the location of Lagos, lying parallel to the South America region.
His words: “We want to let Lagosians know what is going
on, and what to expect, it is not to create panic, they should be careful
around the ocean and lagoon. In the last five to six days, around the
Caribbean, from Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba and Hurricane Sandy has hit the east coast
of America.
“Normally, when such happens, and the magnitude of it
hits that part of the world, we always have a ripple effect in Lagos and around
the West Coast.
Also speaking, Ibirogba urged residents to be vigilant,
assuring that the state government’s emergency response squad was on alert to
manage any likely surge caused by Hurricane Sandy.
Special Adviser on Environment, Folami however, warned
residents to refrain from dumping refuse in drainages and canals.

Gowon Speaks On Chinua Achebe's Controversial New Book, Calls It A Propaganda

Latest person to react to Chinua Achebe's new book is the former head of state himself Gen. Yakubu Gowon.
Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, has described
Prof. Chinua Achebe’s Nigerian Civil War memoir in his latest book, There was a
Country, as “a propaganda”. Achebe in the book, accused the Federal Government
under Gowon and the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who was then the Minister of
Finance, of using hunger as a weapon of war against the Republic of Biafra.
But Gowon, who spoke to punch on the telephone on
Tuesday, said though many books had been written about the civil war, none had
been as controversial as that of Achebe.
He said the book was “written to whip up unnecessary
sentiments”.
He said when he releases his biography many will know
what happened during the war.
Gowon said, “Many books have been written about the civil
war and unfortunately none had been as controversial as that of Achebe, which
accused me and Chief Awolowo of genocide against the Igbo. Nothing can be
further from the truth, because every decision we took was for the interest of
a united Nigeria.
“It (Achebe’s book) is nothing more than a propaganda and
many people have failed to see it that way, and that is why most of the
reactions have been varied and vitriolic.
“I am not aware of any Igboman that had an account with
the then Barclays Bank that was seized, because at the end of the war many of
them got their money back. And it was because of our resolve to ensure that
there was no victor no vanquished. We wanted to put the experience of the civil
war behind us. We put in place a lot of measure to ensure that everybody was
reintegrated into a united Nigeria.
“So it is very unfortunate for Achebe to accuse me and
Awolowo of starving the Igbo to death.”
The Chairman of Nigeria Prays added the majority of of
the principal actors at the end of the war did not appear as if they were
starved.
He said he stood by every decision he took during the
civil war and ready to defend his actions anywhere.
The former Chief of Army Staff denied that he prevented
foreign aid from reaching the Igbo during the war. Gowon added, “Most of those
who accused us of genocide were looking well fed at the end of the war. During
the war we opened road and air corridors to allow food, medicine and other aids
to the people. Nobody can do such a thing to his people because I was
optimistic that the war would end one day and we shall come together under a
united country.
“So that was why we were very careful about every
decision we took during the civil war
The 78-year-old said by the time he publishes his own
account of the war, most of those insinuations would be laid to rest.
“I have been sufficiently challenged and the whole truth
will be revealed one day,” he said

I Love Him But.....Im Not Sure

Doubt kills a relationship; even the most perfect couple have ended up ruining their relationship because of doubt. So if you love a guy, do not come up with these doubts.
I love him but I don't like his family: This is one of the first things that women say. You must realise that he is a product of his family. So if you don't like his family, you will eventually end up not liking him. Otherwise, you can be a positive person and say that you will love his family just as much as you love him.
I love him but he doesn't earn enough: That is a tricky one. Every girl has some dreams. You have to take a call on whether your dreams are stronger than your love for him. Moreover, he may not earn enough now but does he have prospects for the future? This doubt in your relationship can be cleared only by you.
I love him but he doesn't love me: In that case, dump him. You must always be with the person who loves you the most and not with the person you love the most. That is the secret to a happy relationship.
I love him but he is not my soul mate: For sustaining a long term relationship, you need understanding more than love. Wild passion is a fleeting emotion; it will pass. So, it is better that you drop the guy you think you love and pursue someone who will be your soul mate. Be very clear in the parameters you have for your soul mate or else you will never find him.
I love him but I don't know if I always will: Trust me, if he is a practical guy he is thinking the same thing. Nothing is permanent in this world but nobody starts a relationship with the intention of ending it. The intent to stay together forever must be there, the rest will take care of itself.
I love him but I can't live with him: If you love him enough, then you will find a way to live with him. Relationships are all about compromise and adjustments; you cannot escape it. Never calculate how much you are investing in the relationship and compare it with how much he is putting in. Only if you rise above selfish motives will you be able to make it work.
Where there is love, there should be no 'ifs' and 'buts'. But most of the times, women don't know what they want. So these points should help them banish doubt from a relationship.
